Now, because leather is an organic material (AKA, animal hides), it can hold a much larger of amount or urine residue (therefore odor) than regular ole fabric.
Thus, most cleaning methods from the grocery store are about as useful as wiping the affected area with a single-ply tissue.
Over the last 10 years, I've had tanners, taxidermists, and leather workers tell me what works and what doesn't.
The #1 rule of thumb? DO NOT use Leather Conditioner (like Lexol) until after you've gotten rid of the residue. Otherwise, you'll neutralize the odor remover. Yikes.
Step 1: Buy OdorXit Concentrate and a UV LED Flashlight at www.OdorXit.com When your package arrives use the UV LED Flashlight to locate the affected areas. They will glow yellowish green under the UV light.
Step 2: Use a mild detergent to gently clean those areas. Do not scrub, tug or pull on the wet leather.
Step 3: Dilute ½ oz. of OdorXit Concentrate in a 16 oz. Trigger Spray Bottle with water.
If urine or other contaminants has seeped into the area, make sure that the OdorXit solution comes in contact with the raw side of the leather. In all cases, if the back of the leather can be reached, treat that area as well.
Step 4: Pay special attention to seams, sides, buttons and adornments during this gentle cleaning. Be sure the OdorXit solution gets into any stitching hole where the cloth has absorbed urine. That’s most likely where the urine is hiding.
Urine also finds its way into the cloth underneath the leather and hides. It’s another important spot to spray!
Step 5: After treating the area, allow it to dry naturally.
Step 6: Mist water on the area and smell to see if re-treatment is necessary. If so, repeat Steps 2-6 as necessary to neutralize the odor. When the odor is completely removed, the water will generate no odor at all.
Step 7: Now it's safe to apply Lexol Leather Conditioner. Enjoy!
One quick note You must know that the texture and flexibility of leather can be radically altered by water, so we want to be VERY careful with water. Lexol will help with that after you get the odor out!
