Importance of Spring Cleaning College Dorms

  • 05 May, 2017
While spring cleaning is something that most homeowners think about and many take part in, it’s easier for people like college students who are living in dorms to overlook. But just because spring cleaning may not be as common throughout college dorms doesn’t mean you should skip it.
In fact, dorms are actually really great candidates for spring cleaning. Since college students already have a lot on their plate, we want to cover some important reasons why this type of task is worthwhile:
The Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Spring Cleaning
So, where exactly does the idea of spring cleaning come from? There are actually a few different places where this practice can be traced back to. In the 19th century North America (which was prior to the invention of the vacuum cleaner), spring was the best time of year for dusting. This is because it was getting warm enough to open windows and doors, but not so warm enough for insects to be a problem. High winds could also carry the dust out of the house.
While modern appliances and conveniences make spring cleaning a simpler process, there are still some very clear benefits. For college students, the act of spring cleaning can provide a mental boost in the form of starting fresh and wiping away dust & other debris from the winter season. Because both clutter and chaos are common traits college students have to deal with, being able to take a step back and assess the area where you live is great for mental well-being.
There are also some very important physical health benefits associated with spring cleaning. By making a pass through your entire dorm, you’ll be able to get rid of pollen, dust mites and mold spores that can contribute to a wide range of conditions like allergies or other respiratory issues. A good spring cleaning session throughout a dorm will also remove all kinds of potentially harmful germs and bacteria.
Tips for Spring Cleaning College Dorms
Now that we’ve covered the “why” of college dorm spring cleaning, we want to share a few “how” tips. It’s a good idea to split your spring cleaning into two sessions. You can use the first session to get all the clutter out of your dorm. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t remember the last time you used a certain item, you should sell, donate or trash it.
Then once your dorm is free of clutter, you can use the second session to do a thorough cleaning. This is a good time to tackle any lingering odors that are in your dorm. With OdorXit , we make it easy to quickly get rid of unpleasant odors for good. MOMS - Mold Odor Mildew Smoke is a perfect spray to rid your dorm of dust mites or even AQM Air Quality Manager - a  gas that gets released in the air to oxidize those same dust mites or allergens in the air.

By cleaning all those often overlooked spots and using OdorXit wherever needed, you’ll be able to enjoy having a clean dorm that looks and feels great! And to keep your dorm fresh after spring cleaning, OdorXit Magic is the perfect freshener to combat continuous smells that may come up like cigarettes, wacky tabaccy or intramural sports stink.

The recent storms that have ravaged multiple parts of the US have caused unprecedented damage. If you or your loved ones were affected by any of these storms, our thoughts and best wishes go out to you. Because these storms were so large in scale, people have experienced everything from moderate to complete damage.

Since getting rid of bad odors is our area of expertise, we want to help anyone who lost power for an extended period of time during one of these storms but didn't face complete damage to their home and belongings. Even if you're dealing with a refrigerator that smells incredibly bad due to it being fully defrosted and having items like frozen food decompose for days or even weeks, we want to go over how you can fully restore your appliance to its former condition.

5 Steps to Saving Your Refrigerator After Losing Electricity

The first step is to remove all of the spoiled food. This can be a truly nasty and smelly experience, which is why you'll want to wear a protective mask and gloves as you do it. Once your refrigerator is clean, take it outside and spray it out with a garden hose. If you have a truck or access to one, consider taking your appliance to a car wash and use the high-powered equipment to spray it out.

The next step is to spray one ounce of OdorXit Concentrate mixed with 30 ounces of water everywhere the refrigerator smells. That means spraying the insulation behind the doors,

under and around the door gaskets, the inside, behind the drawers and every little opening where the defrosted food might have dripped. Once the OdorXit Concentrate solution comes in contact with the rotten food smells, it will remove them from your refrigerator completely and safely.

The second to last step is to let the refrigerator dry outside then bring it back in the house. Don't panic if it still smells a little. It just means there is still at least one spot that hasn't been treated yet. You'll be able to knock it out by continuing to sniff and spraying wherever you detect even a slight odor.

The final step is to remember to be a good neighbor! Spray a few shots of the OdorXit Concentrate solution in the drain at the car wash or wherever you ended up treating your appliance. Anyone who comes by after you will be very glad you did.

By following the process above, it's possible to save even the worst smelling refrigerator, which in turns means saving hundreds of dollars by not needing to buy a replacement. So if you know anyone who's currently trying to restore belongings like their refrigerator, feel free to share this post with them by email or on Facebook.
